The existence of a vaccine against the SARS-Cov-2 virus that causes Covid-19 is a new hope to overcome the pandemic. Now, you can get vaccines easily at various health care centers or other vaccine centers. However, sometimes the question arises in the community, is it okay to receive the vaccine when you have a cold or are not feeling well? Check out the following review to find out the answer.

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC recommends that people with moderate to severe illness delay getting the vaccine. The Covid-19 vaccine can be given if the condition has improved or is in good health.  This also applies to people who have moderate to severe flu. Vaccination during the flu should be postponed until the body is really fit.  People who are sick, including the flu, need to delay the vaccine to prevent adverse things, such as vaccine side effects that may feel more severe.  As with the flow of vaccine implementation, you certainly have to do a screeninghealth by health workers. At this stage, the doctor will check your health condition, starting from your physical condition, body temperature, blood pressure, blood sugar, and others.  This is to ensure that you are completely healthy before receiving the Covid-19 vaccine.  However, the CDC itself allows giving the Covid-19 vaccine to people who have mild illness. To ensure this, you can consult a doctor or vaccinator at the location of the vaccine center you are going to.  In addition, the flu, runny nose, or cough are the most common symptoms of Covid-19. That’s why, if you have this condition, you should postpone vaccination. Because, maybe you are exposed to Covid-19.  In this case, the CDC clearly emphasizes delaying vaccination in people who are exposed to the SARS-Cov 2 virus or Covid-19, until the person is cured. This recommendation applies before receiving the first or second dose of vaccine.

What conditions cannot receive the Covid-19 vaccine?

Basically, all the Covid-19 vaccines currently circulating have been clinically tested and are safe to use for the public. Not only the elderly, adults, and teenagers, even the Covid-19 vaccine can now be given to children aged 6-11 years. This is as recommended by the Indonesian Pediatrician Association and the approval of the Indonesian POM.  However, there are several conditions that make a person unable to receive the Covid-19 vaccine, including:

  • People who are moderately to severely ill . As previously explained, people who are sick should delay giving the vaccine to prevent possible side effects.
  • People infected with the SARS-Cov-2 virus or positive for Covid-19 . Vaccination delays are also carried out in people who are confirmed positive for Covid-19 to maximize the side effects of the vaccine.
  • People who are undergoing isolation or quarantine . During isolation or quarantine, a person has the possibility to be positive for Covid-19 so vaccination should be postponed.
  • People suffering from allergies to vaccines . It is undeniable that there have been reports of severe allergic reactions after receiving the Covid-19 vaccine. In this case, the CDC recommends that people who have a history of allergic reactions to vaccines or ingredients contained in the Covid-19 vaccine should not vaccinate.
  • People with comorbidities or comorbidities . Co-morbidities such as immune disorders, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases are at risk of causing side effects from the vaccine. However, as long as the disease is under control and a permit has been obtained from the treating specialist, vaccination may be carried out.
  • Children under 6 years . Based on the recommendation from the Indonesian Pediatrician Association and the approval of the Indonesian POM Agency, the new Covid-19 vaccine may be given to children over the age of 6 years.

Notes

When you are sick, the body will feel uncomfortable, ranging from fever, body aches, to other symptoms. On the other hand, the side effects of the vaccine may be similar, such as fever and muscle aches. When a sick body is added to the vaccine, it is not impossible that the side effects felt will be more severe. That is why it is recommended that you postpone the Covid-19 vaccine when you are sick. In fact, some other vaccines, such as the flu vaccine, may need to be postponed until your body is fit. The Covid-19 vaccine is a powerful way to prevent transmission of the SARS-Cov-2 virus, prevent severe conditions when infected, and reduce the risk of death. It is important that you understand and qualify for the Covid-19 vaccine.  Consult your doctor if you have any special conditions that might affect the effect the vaccine has on your body.
